Following random workouts on YouTube? Stop now!
Here's why. It can expose you to injury, kill your motivation and prevent you from reaching your fitness goals.
It’s 2022 and fitness at home has been evolving faster than most of us have been keeping up.
Let me put this into context a bit more.
Following a non-interactive, randomly designed workout video at home is equivalent to watching movies on a DVD player while the world has moved on to Netflix!
Just don’t do it.
Here are 5 reasons why you should never do another boring, non-interactive YouTube workout at home again!
1. High risk of injury: Exercises that help us develop stronger joints and muscles are also the same ones that can seriously injure us – if performed incorrectly. It’s not natural to land the perfect lunge technique or master the deadlift in your first go. Muscle memory is something that our body develops over time. To avoid poor workout techniques that would 100% result in an injury over time, it is critical to work out with coaching & supervision from an experienced instructor.
2. Zero personalization: When it comes to fitness, a ‘one-size-fits-all’ approach is a thing of the past. Your workout regime should factor in multiple data points like your current fitness level, goal, body type, workout history and any existing injuries or chronic conditions. Picking an off-the-shelf workout means you’re conveniently ignoring all of above. Not only would you not get the right results, you could also be exerting effort in the wrong direction. Which would only get you to the wrong outcome, very fast!
3. No feedback loop: The most signit difference between working out at home vs. with an instructor at a gym is direct supervision. To get better at anything - including your workout - one needs a coach who can give us real-time feedback. An instructor who has their eyes on you – someone who can tell you when to push harder and when to slow down. This ability to modify the workout to fit your real-time need is something a YouTube workout will never be able to offer.
4. No accountability: Every workout is an opportunity to push your physical limit and unlock a new milestone in your fitness journey. But this hardly happens when you are doing a random YouTube workout at home with no communication from the instructor on screen. To break fat-loss plateaus and set new personal bests, it is imperative to push beyond your comfort zone. However, the chances of that happening when the instructor does not have their eyes on you – are zero.
5. Lack of motivation: Fitness is more mental than physical. Sometimes all we need is someone who can remind us of our potential, even when we don’t believe in it ourselves. The sense of achievement that follows is what keeps bringing us back to the mat. An overwhelming majority of people working out online without guidance quote “lack of motivation” as the most common reason for quitting.
